the epublishing book

Welcome

Hello, I’m Dan Pelland. The publishing industry is in a state of change (understatement intended). That’s a real concern for some businesses, but it’s also an opportunity for new growth, some of which may benefit the flourishing community of independent writers. While creating a well designed ebook might seem trivial at first, it poses some unexpected challenges. I help my wife, Maryan (the literary brains of the family), with her writing and publishing business, OnText.com, by maintaining the website and doing page layout for her print publications using Adobe InDesign. My first attempt at ebook design was an eye opener. Humbled, I’m now intent on learning the very best ways to design and publish ebooks. I discover something new every day and I’m happy to share my experiences. This is an ambitious project, but I’ll try to make it worth your while by covering the latest news, digging up the really cool stuff from the forums and maybe even getting some guest interviews with the pros.

Just some time and a little patience should do the trick. Getting to know the underlying structure of an ebook, and learning how to manage the markup will put you well on your way to publishing fame and fortune.

First, let’s look at the terms we’ll use to describe the elements of an EPUB based digital edition.
